Cyprus Tax Identification Number (TIC) 2026: Format, Uses and How to Apply

A Cyprus Tax Identification Code (TIC) is the unique tax reference number required for any individual or company with tax obligations in Cyprus. It consists of 8 digits followed by one capital letter, for example 99999999L.
What the Cyprus TIC Is Used For
The TIC, also referred to as a TIN (Tax Identification Number), is required for:
- Filing personal or corporate income tax returns via TaxisNet.
- Registering for VAT with the Cyprus Tax Department.
- Opening a bank account in Cyprus - financial institutions are legally required to collect it.
- Employment registration with the Social Insurance Services.
- Completing any formal transaction with the Cyprus Tax Department.
Format and Structure
The Cyprus TIC consists of 9 characters: 8 digits followed by one capital letter from the Latin alphabet. Since 27 March 2023, new TICs are issued from the sequence starting at 60000000, with a check character generated by a standardised algorithm. TICs issued before that date retain their original format and remain valid.
Not Issued Automatically
A Cyprus TIC is not issued automatically to every resident or taxpayer. Under Articles 5 and 5A of the Assessment and Collection of Taxes Law of 1978, it is the responsibility of each individual or legal entity with tax obligations to register and request a TIC. Failure to register is a legal violation.
How to Apply
Applications can be submitted in person at any local Cyprus Tax Department office. Online registration is available through TaxisNet at taxisnet.mof.gov.cy. Documents typically required include:
- Passport or national identity card.
- Proof of address in Cyprus (rental agreement or utility bill).
- For employees: employment contract or confirmation from employer.
- For companies: certificate of incorporation.
There is no fee to obtain a TIC. Processing is generally completed within a few working days.
Finding an Existing TIC
An existing TIC appears on previous Cyprus tax returns, on VAT registration certificates, and on the TaxisNet online portal. For enquiries, the Cyprus Tax Department can be contacted at hq@tax.mof.gov.cy.
